Umrah Guide: Step by Step
This practical guide covers the essential Umrah sequence so you can perform each step with clarity and confidence.
1) Prepare intention and Ihram
Before crossing the miqat boundary, make your intention for Umrah sincerely for Allah and enter Ihram. Men wear the two white cloths and women wear modest clothing without specific color restrictions.
Recite the talbiyah frequently after entering Ihram and continue until starting Tawaf.
2) Perform Tawaf around the Kaaba
Begin Tawaf at the Black Stone line and complete seven counterclockwise circuits around the Kaaba. Keep your focus on worship, dhikr, and dua.
After Tawaf, pray two rakah behind Maqam Ibrahim when possible, or anywhere in the Haram if crowded.
3) Complete Sai between Safa and Marwah
Walk from Safa to Marwah and back for seven total rounds, beginning at Safa and ending at Marwah. Maintain remembrance and supplication throughout the rite.
Take your pace according to health and crowd conditions; preserving safety and calm is part of proper adab.
4) Cut or shave hair to exit Ihram
Men should shave or trim all hair, with shaving being more virtuous for many pilgrims. Women cut a small fingertip-length portion of hair.
Once hair cutting is completed, Umrah is finished and Ihram restrictions are lifted.
5) Common mistakes to avoid
Avoid pushing through crowds, raising voice in arguments, or treating rituals as a checklist without presence of heart.
If uncertain about rulings, ask trusted scholars or official guidance resources before acting.
