About Al Haram in Mekkah
The Al Haram Mosque is the holiest site in Islam, located in the heart of Mekkah, Saudi Arabia. It is home to the Kaaba, the focal point of Muslim prayers worldwide. Pilgrims from all over the world visit this sacred site during Hajj and Umrah, making it a central part of Muslim life.
History of Makkah (2004 - 2024)
The city of Makkah has seen significant changes and events over the last two decades, shaping its spiritual and infrastructural importance for Muslims worldwide. Below is a brief timeline of key events.
- 2005 - Expansion of Al Haram Mosque: Saudi authorities initiated large-scale expansion projects for Al Haram Mosque, increasing its capacity to accommodate more than two million worshippers during Hajj and Umrah seasons.
- 2012 - Opening of the Makkah Clock Tower: One of the world’s largest clock towers, the Abraj Al-Bait complex was completed, featuring hotels, shopping malls, and the iconic clock that dominates the skyline of Makkah.
- 2015 - Crane Collapse in Al Haram: During a construction project within Al Haram Mosque, a crane collapsed due to strong winds, resulting in the tragic deaths of over 100 pilgrims and hundreds more injured. This event was a solemn moment in Makkah’s modern history.
- 2017 - Introduction of New Hajj Regulations: Saudi Arabia introduced new rules for Hajj, including a cap on pilgrim numbers per country to better manage crowd safety and security. These reforms were part of Vision 2030 aimed at modernizing the pilgrimage experience.
- 2020 - COVID-19 Pandemic and Restricted Hajj: For the first time in modern history, Hajj was severely restricted due to the global pandemic, with only a limited number of local pilgrims allowed to perform the rituals. This marked an unprecedented pause in the full-scale pilgrimage.
- 2022 - Full Return of Pilgrims Post-Pandemic: In 2022, Saudi authorities reopened Makkah for pilgrims worldwide as COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, allowing a resumption of normal pilgrimage activities with new health protocols in place.
- 2023 - Largest Hajj in History: In 2023, Makkah witnessed the largest gathering of pilgrims in modern history, with over 2.5 million people performing Hajj. This demonstrated the success of infrastructure improvements and crowd management technologies introduced in recent years.
- 2024 - Continued Expansion and Infrastructure Projects: The Saudi government continues to expand and modernize the holy city, including new hotels, transport systems, and facilities to enhance the pilgrimage experience and prepare for an even larger influx of pilgrims in the coming years.
